The Oklahoma Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School Program, in collaboration with the Oklahoma State Department of Health, Communities Putting Prevention to Work, and the National Safe Routes to School Partnership, is offering no-cost training to elementary school teachers statewide who are interested in teaching Oklahoma’s SafeCylist Program (OSCP) in the classroom. What is the Oklahoma SafeCyclist Program? The Oklahoma SafeCyclist Program (OSCP) is modeled after the BikeTexas SuperCyclist program. It is a comprehensive safety education program focusing on bicycle and pedestrian safety for 4th through 6th grade students. As interest grows in addressing childhood obesity, many schools and teachers are taking advantage of no-cost resources available to them. The OSCP toolkit is a bicycle and pedestrian safety curriculum designed to be taught in the classroom by qualified SafeCyclist teachers. The SafeCyclist curriculum introduces lessons that enable teachers to combine bicycling and pedestrian curriculum with Math, Science, English and Art lessons. This curriculum has been aligned with Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS). How to Register? The Oklahoma Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School and the Oklahoma State Department of Health are recruiting Oklahoma PE teachers to attend a no-cost Oklahoma SafeCyclist training scheduled for Friday, January 14, 2011. Designated training location is Jefferson Elementary School located at 205 N. Cockrel in Norman, OK. Training will begin at 8:30 am and ends at 3:00 pm. Healthy light refreshments and LUNCH are provided. In-state mileage reimbursement to and from the SafeCyclist training is offered @ .050/per mile. The training session is a five-hour course. Upon completion all teachers will receive a copy of the SafeCyclist curriculum and 5 hours of professional development credits. Prior to the training date, all teachers must have on file a signed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) confirming the partner’s commitment to implement the basic SafeCyclist curriculum at their school site as well as administer evaluation materials to the students. If interested in attending the OK SafeCyclist training scheduled for January 14, 2011, please download the application and email to Mary Massey.
